Speak Out on the #GradTax
December 5, 2017

If you’re concerned about pending legislation that would make graduate student tuition waivers taxable, here are steps you can take.

  1. Go to house.gov and look in the upper right corner for "Find Your Representative"
  2. After putting in your zip code, your elected official's photo and contact info will appear. Click on the name to be directed to their site.
  3. Find the contact form on their site and send a short message:

Dear Representative:

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that passed the House of Representatives includes a repeal of the income exclusion for graduate student tuition waivers. This will add a huge tax burden to graduate students that make a median wage of just over $34,000. In addition, it will discourage promising students from pursuing graduate school in STEM at a time when our nation urgently needs it. I urge you to strongly oppose the repeal and to add your name to the letter that Congressman Pete Sessions is developing. To do so, please contact Ron Donado @ Ron.Donado@mail.house.gov.

University Departments that are concerned about the issue should forward the note to their university government relations offices. Those offices will be able to contact the delegation to urge that they sign on.
