Message from the President
May 31, 2020
As an international society, we have had to adapt quickly to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was uplifting to see the SBN community come together for the virtual awards ceremony in a show of support to our society and the honorees.
We now reach out to provide support to our members in the United States, who have seen tragedies revealing the very ugly evidence of racism in our country. The images and videos highlight systemic structures that we must work to tear down as individuals and as a scientific society. We encourage our members to engage with anti-racism resources by viewing the information on the link below.
Anti-Racism Resources
As biologists, we are all part of a sacred community of individuals who love life. Diversity is something to be cherished, and this goes equally for nature and for humans. It is of utmost importance that we now, more than ever, function as a community and share in our abhorrence of racism and in our sadness for the victims, and not just what we see on the news but that racism that infects all of our everyday lives.
We want to acknowledge that these times are particularly challenging for our black colleagues and trainees. Please know that the SBN cherishes you, stands with you, and is here for you.
Sincerely,
Barney Schlinger, President of SBN
Stephanie Correa, Chair of the Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Committee
